Kerosene Sweetening / Hydrotreating
Mercaptans (RSH) and Sulfur can be naturally present in crude oils. Mercaptans can also be generated from other sulfur compounds during crude fractionation and cracking processes and can be found in various products, more particularly Kerosene.
Depending on the extent of the presence of those sulfur species and the target to be achieved, a sweetening step or a hydrotreatment can be envisaged.
Mercaptans are undesirable and have to be eliminated because of their obnoxious odor and their tendency to hydrolyze, forming toxic and corrosive hydrogen sulfide.
The sweetening of kerosene aims to convert the acidic mercaptans sulfur compounds to neutral disulfides in order to pass the classic tests for mercaptan presence: copper corrosion strip test and the doctor test.
