HF Alkylation
In an Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) Alkylation unit (see figure), purified light olefins (C3 and C4) from an FCC unit are combined with isobutene to generate alkylate, a high octane product that can be blended into the gasoline pool.
As this refining process uses Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) as a catalyst, the effluent streams, mainly propane, isobutane and alkylate, will contain HF and some organic fluorides. These fluoride compounds must be removed to prevent corrosion of downstream equipment and to meet an adequate fluoride specification.
The adsorbents from AxTrap™ 600 series benefits from years of Axens’ experience on fluoride removal, feedback from clients and a continuous effort in product R&D.
AxTrap™ 601 / 602
AxTrap™ 601 / 602 is a non-regenerative activated alumina with high specific surface area and optimized pore size distribution. This guarantees excellent mechanical strength properties throughout the life of the material as well as a very good adsorption capability.
This product removes residual HF and organic fluorides from the refinery alkylation unit. The trapping mechanism involves active sites designed for converting fluorinated hydrocarbons to HF followed by its adsorption.
AxTrap™ 601 / 602 is also well suited as a dry scrubbing agent for environmental control applications. It can be used to reduce fluoride emissions from industrial processes such as the purification of exhaust gases from brazing and welding.
AxTrap™ 612
AxTrap™ 612 is Axens’ adsorbent with the highest fluoride trapping capacity. It was especially designed for selective removal of HF and fluorinated hydrocarbons from product streams leaving an HF alkylation unit (LPG grade propane, normal butane, C5 and alkylate).
This product offers excellent mechanical strength and attrition resistance in order to avoid the downstream plugging. In addition, it minimizes the carbon formation and coking, resulting in higher fluoride loadings and a longer lifetime.
